HISTORY
In 1988, Geoff “Hutch” Hutchison purchased a small surf shop down the back of an alleyway in Victoria St, Hamilton. Having just taken a redundancy from NZ Rail, he decided to follow his passion of surfing and purchased the business named after Backdoor Pipe, a famous surf break on Hawaii’s North Shore. After selling just one block of wax on his first day he wondered whether he had done the right thing…
Hutch was joined by his brother-in-law, Cameron Cutmore, in 1997 and a second store was opened. The rest is history – now with 19 stores across the North Island plus Nelson, Blenheim, Christchurch, and Timaru Hutch and Cam are still hard at work along with a team of the originals, making sure that everything you see in store and online is true to our authentic roots.
