Spring into Napier

Hawke’s Bay is at it’s best when the sun shines, and while that happens all year (of course), October is when the magic really starts.

If you are in to al fresco dining, cocktail sipping, boutique shopping and leisurely walks or bike rides by the water (and who isn’t) you can’t look passed Napier CBD.

Of course, every good morning starts with coffee, and boy does Napier have that in spades, everywhere you look is a great café offering up delicious brews.  There are so many to choose from, we’ve already done a write up on it – see Napier: land of the long white cloud and sample your way around town.

If you have perhaps sampled one too many delicious local wines the night before (we recommend Matisse Wine Bar for this very task) a visit to local legends Hapi may be in order. Having moved down the road recently their food philosophy is wrapped up in the quote “our food is our medicine, our medicine is our food”. There you will find incredible cold pressed juices, vegan desserts, and everything in between sure to cure any ill (self created or not).

Because we are being tourists in our own country at the moment, it would be rude not to pay some attention to what Napier is best known for – it’s Art Deco heritage. Warm up those limbs with a guided walk around the compact CBD with one of the many Art Deco Trust volunteers who can clue you up on the story of the 1931 Earthquake that decimated the CBD and it’s subsequent rebuild.

If it’s shopping you are looking for – well…look no further. Napier has a fantastic amount of boutique shopping options ready, willing and able to lighten the load in your wallet. Step into the beautifully curated Madisons and we dare you not to imagine your entire house filled with its contents. The entire warehouse style showroom is chocka block of gorgeous homewares, with owner/operator Mother/Daughter duo Trish & Amber on hand to skilfully assist you to add a little bit of Madisons luxe into your everyday life.

A hop, skip and a jump down the road is Two Lippy Ladies – the epitome of 50’s rockabilly glam womenswear.  The Two Lippy Ladies themselves, Natalie and Karla, are well known Napier personalities and fantastic ambassadors for Napier. Stop in for a gorgeous, unique summer dress, and leave with the best restaurant recommendations as well.

Speaking of restaurants, Napier has recently seen resurgence in the food scene, with local legends Mister D and Bistronomy now backed up with a few additional delicious newcomers. Step into the beautifully renovated Central Fire Station and you will find – The Central Fire Station Bistro (funny that). This gorgeous restaurant opened late 2019 and under head chef Sam Clark (previously of Cable Vineyard and Clooney fame) creates simple and delicious food using the best local ingredients. Alongside Sam, his wife Florencia is an amazingly talented pasty chef. You can find her creations not only on the menu at the restaurant, but also in Flora’s Cake Studio also within the building – we dare you step out of there empty handed.

Take in a leisurely afternoon cocktail and people watch at Market Street Bar & Eatery.  Perfectly situated in the middle of the action you can sit outside in the Market Street garden bar, or tuck yourselves out the back on the deck. Their skilful bartenders can whip you up the perfect concoction and you can sit back and watch the world go by. Alternatively, if it’s craft beer you are after, 2020 newcomers Rogue Hop have just the tipple for any taste buds. The two story self proclaimed speakeasy is a hot bed for fun, and bonus – if you like the beer, you can buy some to take home! CONVENIENT.

Napier CBD is not Hawke’s Bay’s premier shopping and dining district for no good reason. And we have about 450 reasons to visit, found under our business-listing page HERE.

We look forward to hosting you in our gorgeous CBD soon.
