The hotly contested Art Deco Fashion on the Foreshore is welcoming a new fashion category in 2021 to become more inclusive.
Following Art Deco 2020, Napier City Business Inc received feedback from the community that contestants were unhappy about the lack of diversity, ethnicity and LGBTQ exclusiveness of the overall competition format.
Napier City Business inc General Manager Pip Thompson said her and her team are passionate about representing the entire community and felt strongly that this competition needed to become more inclusive and the Art Deco Festival needed to make some changes to the Fashion on the Foreshore competition.
This led us to arranging a meeting with the Art Deco Festival Director – Greg Howie – where we communicated the sentiment shared with us and our idea to introduce the Rainbow Runway to the Fashion on the Foreshore event. He was entirely in support of the introduction of this new category and introduced us to their Fashions on the Foreshore Events Manager.
Napier City Business have been working with the Metropolitan Club to support the delivery of this event and have proudly confirmed itself as the Rainbow Runway Category Sponsor for Fashions on the Foreshore 2021. We will be offering to walk the Rainbow Runway with any entrant that would feel more comfortable with an ally.
Fashion is a vital form of cultural and creative expression, and we want everyone attending the Art Deco Festival to feel safe, comfortable and welcome taking to the catwalk to express their personal interpretation of art deco style.” say’s Rose Jackson, Curator of Napier’s Art Deco Festival fashion programme and Director of The Metropolitan Club
Along with sponsoring the Rainbow Runway category in the Fashion on the Foreshore, Napier City Business are also hosting a FREE Art Deco retail walking tour along with a Napier CBD shop window competition.
