Warmth, Safety, and Hope: Āhuru Mōwai Night Shelter Open in Napier
The Night Shelter – Āhuru Mōwai is a safe, warm place for some of Napier’s most vulnerable people, our Whānau Pounamu—those sleeping rough on the streets. It has been established by the Napier Ahuriri Homeless Shelter Society, a group formed after the sad deaths of two men and one woman who were living without shelter.
The Shelter is a short-term place for people to rest, feel safe, and begin their journey towards a better, more stable life supported by individualised development programmes.
The Shelter will be open every day from 4 pm to 8 am. It will run for 12 weeks during the winter, starting on 1 July, and then the Society will review how it went and decide on next steps.
Trained staff from Whatever it Takes Trust will be on-site during these hours. The police are being kept fully informed. There will be clear rules to keep everyone safe:
- No alcohol or drugs allowed inside
- Strict admission process
- No visitors
- Clear rules for how to handle any incidents
Right now, the Shelter is only for men. Mixing groups can be unsafe or uncomfortable, so we’ve made the decision to start with a men-only Shelter to ensure everyone’s safety. We know there are also women and young people in need, and we are continuing to explore how to support them too.
The Society will gratefully accept donations that will help us with:
- Bedding, food, clothing, toiletries
- Staff wages and volunteer coordination
- Health, wellbeing, and reintegration support
Donate DirectlyOne-off or regular giving via secure payment.
