Napier Hospitality Venues Unite Over Humble Pie

Few foods are as deeply woven into Kiwi life as the humble pie.

Whether it’s grabbed from the local bakery on a road trip, eaten at smoko, or shared around the table at home, everyone has a favourite.

This August, 23 hospitality venues across Napier City and Ahuriri are joining forces for Humble Pie – a month-long celebration of one of New Zealand’s most iconic comfort foods.

The initiative grew from conversations between local hospitality operators who wondered: what if we created something together? The answer was Humble Pie.

There’s no competition, no judges and no prizes. Instead, each venue has created an exclusive pie just for the month, encouraging locals and visitors to discover new flavours and revisit old favourites.

Expect everything from classic café and bakery pies to chef-crafted restaurant creations, globally inspired flavours and even a few sweet surprises, showcasing the creativity and diversity of Napier’s hospitality scene.

Common Deli is serving its take on the classic bacon and egg pie, describing it as “like Nan’s, but better,” while Mister D is putting a refined twist on Kiwiana with a pāua, pork and watercress pie.

At Hapi, Humble Pie has provided the perfect excuse to bring pies back to the menu, with chef Cristian creating a smoked ika and kūtai pie inspired by traditional Māori kai, alongside a vegetarian pie showcasing fresh seasonal greens from Hapi’s own māra kai. Staying true to Hapi’s philosophy, the pies will feature handmade pastry and thoughtfully sourced ingredients, proving comfort food can be nourishing too.

For Dajko’s Kilim Café, Humble Pie is a chance to share another culture’s version of comfort food through a traditional Balkan-style börek.

“The Kiwi pie feels like what börek is back home – simple, comforting food that brings people together around the table”, says owner Yusuf Dogru.

Napier City Business Inc. General Manager Pip Thompson says what makes Humble Pie special is the way venues have embraced the idea in their own unique way.

“The humble pie is one of those foods almost every Kiwi has a connection to, but what’s really exciting to see is how differently each venue will interpret it. Some will stay true to the classics, while others have drawn on family recipes, cultural traditions and local ingredients to create something completely new.”

Humble Pie runs 1-31 August, 2026.
