An estimated 18,000 people packed Napier’s city centre on Saturday night for Nuit Blanche – Art After Dark, the city’s biggest turnout since the event began.
The free street party transformed the city into a wonderland of light, music, art, and magic around every corner with four live-music stages, 17 local acts, and more than 10 roving entertainers and buskers bringing energy and excitement across the city.
“This year was next-level for attendance and energy,” said NCBI General Manager Pip Thompson. “If I had to describe it in one word, it was magical.”
Organisers estimate this year’s attendance was up more than 20 percent on 2024, cementing Nuit Blanche’s status as Napier’s most popular annual street event.
A number of local businesses reported one of their strongest trading nights on record, with some retailers seeing sales jump up to 30 percent compared with last year.
Tennyson Gallery owner Lizzie said the night was “so positive and joyful”, with hundreds of regular and first-time visitors flowing through the gallery and plenty of sales.
“Nuit Blanche really has come to signify and celebrate all that is fabulous and fun, inclusive and creative about our unique city. We used to say the season kicked off at Labour Weekend, these days it’s definitely Nuit Blanche that marks the end of winter and the arrival of the good times.”
The expanded footprint proved a winning move, spreading crowds comfortably without losing the sense of connection and celebration. Traders described it as “the right balance – busy but comfortable,” and galleries reported hundreds of visitors through their doors.
Napier City Council’s Event Manager Kevin Murphy said the mix of talent across the four stages “really brought the city to life,” highlighting emerging artists such as Ollie Burns, Tiaki McArdle and Kaden Hura McIntosh, alongside crowd favourites The Soul Choir and NZ music legend Peter Urlich, who closed the night to a packed audience.
Murphy said the audience was “very family-orientated, with lots of toddlers and a big increase in teenagers enjoying themselves too.” Roller Disco, Hungerball, laser projections and cathedral light imaging added to the sense of wonder, while galleries reported being full throughout the evening.
The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the night as one of Napier’s best yet. Nuit Blanche continues to be a proud showcase of the city’s creativity, connection, and community spirit – made possible through the great team effort between Napier City Business Inc and Napier City Council.
