Linsay Grant – Merchant 1948

Retailing is in Linsay Grant’s blood – from the age of 18 she worked in Emerson Street, just along the road from the Overland shoe store she now manages. Over the four years Linsay has been at the helm of Overland, she has taken the store to become one of the best sellers in the country, attributing its success to three things: a great team connection, great product and great service.

“We always have a wonderful selection of hand-crafted leather shoes from around the world that we can offer, our customers are wonderful and Overland, which is New Zealand owned, gives us much in return. We love what we do and we are are all very passionate about shoes,” says Linsay.

For shoe-lovers this summer, Linsay says Mules, aka slides, are right on-trend. “Mules are easy to slip on and off and are a perfect casual shoe. My favourite is ‘Thor’, in dusky pink. Or for something flat, our ‘Balance’ in navy and white polka dot is a great light and comfortable option.”

In February, the Art Deco festival brings Linsay and her team out of the store and onto the street, with their shoe shine chair. “It’s been a wonderful addition and the income from it has helped so many charities over the years. It also brings a lot of joy to visitors.”

My favourite shopping precinct

Napier is great. It’s compact and everything is within walking distance. I love the selection of stores, especially the locally owned ones with their own special twist and the CBD also has a wonderful choice of cafés. The team at Chris Wiig Menswear is great, and I also like Gigi Belle boutique, which has something special for all ages.

When we’re not working…

I am heavily involved in skating so Bay Skate, the new skate park on Marine Parade is an awesome place for everyone. Fresh air, a great location and views to die for. I also enjoy walking along the foreshore with my walking buddies and love going to the Municipal Theatre in Tennyson Street to see ballet and other shows.
