Juliet and Peter Cottrell – The Drama Workshop

The welcome mat is out for The Drama Workshop, which recently expanded from its Havelock North base into Napier’s CBD. Home for Juliet and Peter Cottrell’s drama training business is in Television Hawke’s Bay’s former studio at 6 Hastings Street in Napier’s arts quarter, providing a huge studio space in which children and adults alike perfect their craft.

The Drama Workshop runs a large number of classes designed for building confidence and developing stage skills for children and adults.

“We have the very shy to the very dramatic attend our classes. It’s a blend that works,” says Juliet.

‘Play On!’ is the vast offering of drama classes for children and teens, while HaBYT (Hawke’s Bay Youth Theatre) is an auditioned theatre training company for teenagers and those in their early twenties. Aspiring adult actors are also catered for with drama classes of their own and the Cottrells also run school holiday drama programmes aided by their team of theatre educators. Seventeen classes are held every week and 20 plays and productions are staged each year.

The Drama Workshop also offers conference and event entertainment, and murder mystery nights through ‘Expertease’.

“We love being in Napier and part of an arts revivial, surrounded by galleries and arts businesses. The proximity to the water is great for our holiday programmes!”

My favourite shopping precinct

With teenage children, all the shops at the top of Emerson Street are their favourite haunts so that’s where you’ll find me too. I also love trawling through op-shops for treasures and costumes. For our business needs, we love the convenience of The Warehouse, Briscoes and Noel Leeming, all located in Hastings Street

When we’re not working…

Peter and I love nothing better than enjoying dinner at Mr D’s and Peter can often be found having a big bowl of soup at Emporium before his adult drama classes. We also enjoy having a coffee at Georgia in Tennyson Street or browsing inside Wardini’s bookstore.
